Moving guide
Planning, packing and coordination: the three steps that make the difference between a stressful move and a smooth one.
-
Plan
Set the date, book a survey and decide what to take, what to sell and what to get rid of. The fewer things you move, the less it costs and the less time it takes.
- Ask for a quote at least a month in advance, more in summer.
- Check your building’s rules on moving hours and whether you need a furniture lift.
- If the lorry or lift takes up space on the street, a permit to occupy public land is required: the removals company arranges it.
-
Pack
Protect your belongings with the right materials: sturdy boxes, bubble wrap, paper and stretch film. Label every box with its contents and room.
- Small boxes for books and heavy items, large ones for light things.
- Stand plates and glasses upright, each one wrapped in paper.
- Set aside a “first day” box with documents, chargers, medicines and bed linen.
-
Coordinate
Stay in touch with the crew, have the keys ready and keep walkways clear. When the job is done, check everything together with the movers.
- Take a photo of the TV and computer connections before unplugging them.
- Empty and defrost the fridge the day before.
- On delivery, check furniture and boxes before you sign.
After the move
- Register your change of address (cambio di residenza) at the Comune (town hall) within 20 days.
- Transfer your electricity, gas, water and internet contracts into your name (voltura) or set up new ones.
- Update your address with your bank, doctor, employer and subscriptions.
- Set up mail forwarding for the first few months.
